The Learning Zone is a specialist unit for young people aged 11-14 who do not attend mainstream school.
During the course of the project, the young people undertook a range of curriculum linked activities using digital media equipment to produce this walk and website.
They were responsible for their their own mapping and research, became keen and adept photographers and learned how to conduct and record interviews with older people using broadcast quality recording equipment.
On June 19th, we are going to be celebrating their achievements with an inaugural walk and picnic followed by an exhibition of their photographs at Pontnewynydd Community Centre.

We would also like to thank volunteer Pat Sanderson at Pontypool Museum who unearthed many interesting documents for us relating to the history of the Valley.
Finally, a special thank you to Fiona Ford, Torfaen´s
Countryside Access Officer, whose sheer enthusiasm for the valley and incredible store of local knowledge led us here in the first place.
The Blaensychan Storywalk has been developed by pupils attending the Leaning Zone, Cwmbran, with the help of HyperAction and Torfaen County Borough Council.
HyperAction has been developing digital media projects with schools and the community since 1998.
Over the last ten years, we have run a number of highly successful projects which have helped people of different generations share stories about what’s special about where they live, whether in the countryside or the town.
We could not have completed this project without the help of Bryn Priddle, John Marshall, Alan Hillier, Alan Betty and Robert Jenkins, the retired miners of Blaensychan, who gave their time freely to share their stories with us.
The project was made possible with funding from
administered by the WCVA’s Social Risk team.
Let us know what you think of our website and our walk. We’re aiming to develop more Storywalks across South Wales. If you would like to find out more, contact us storywalks@hyperaction.org.uk
